CinemAmbulante – 2018 edition

CINEMAMBULANTE is a multicultural and multidimensional project whose main goal is to offer a cinema program that is accessible to all, as well as a Kino which is a cinema residency for the inhabitants of Amantea, in order to make culture a tool of integration.

During this third edition, we wanted to create a bridge between Calabria and the different forms of culture that are located on our territory and that have decided to live with us, from the oldest to the most recent. For this reason, not only have we brought the cinema to the people and the people to the cinema but we also wanted to create opportunities for meetings, moments of sharing, that have allowed us to deepen our project.

The initiative for this project is part of MigrArti, support promoted by the Ministry of Cultural Property and Activities and Tourism.

The third edition took place in the four Calabrian provinces, from June 12 to 21, 2018.

All meetings and screenings were organized with free access.

THE STEPS OF CINEMAMBULANTE

WEDNESDAY JUNE 13 – CINE TEATRO METROPOLITANO DLF, REGGIO CALABRIA (RC)

In collaboration with the ARCI of Reggio Calabria, we have organized the screening of the film A CIAMBRA by Jonas Carpignano and send a clear message: OPEN THE DOORS. After a very early departure from Amantea, a little mishap happened to us: Asmara’s car engine gave up. The tow truck drove us off the highway, then took our transportation to the garage. In the meantime, Domenico came to pick us up and we arrived in Reggio Calabria just in time. The screening room was packed. Some people even watched the entire film standing up, without complaining. After a warm embrace, we went back home. The screening was freely accessible, open to all, and allowed the collection of funds, on the initiative of the Trade Union of Base, to return the body of Soumaila Sacko, the migrant killed June 2 in San Calogero, to Mali.

THE SCREENING:

A CIAMBRA

by Jonas Carpignano (Italy)
In “A Ciambra”, a small Roma community on the outskirts of Gioia Tauro, Pio Amato is trying to grow as quickly as possible. At the age of fourteen, he drinks, he smokes and is one of the few who manages to integrate into the diverse realities of this place: at the same time Italians, African immigrants and the members of the Roma community.

THURSDAY JUNE 14 – GREEK AMPHITHEATER, ROCCABERNARDA (KR)

In collaboration with Culture in… Movimento, we have organized a screening and then the creation of a fresco by the Venezuelan artist Sara Fratini, through which she wanted to pay tribute to women and to multiculturalism. We were welcomed by the Roccabernarda community and we celebrated the end of Ramadan with Fatima and Yoko, young girls whom we met at the refugee center of Amantea, for the first edition of CinemAmbulante.

Something really beautiful happened to us: to make a picture of the fresco that was of good quality, we needed a drone. So, we posted a message on Facebook asking if someone in the area could lend us this type of equipment. The Calabrian network exploded: Fernanda De Luca showed the post to Filly Pollinzi who wrote to Francesco Laterza. The latter quickly shared and, in a few minutes, we were on the phone with Emanuele Lepera who immediately came to take magnificent shots of the fresco with his drone. You can admire them in the video below.

THE FRESCO:

« I called this artwork « VECINAS » (neighbour, in english) because these women coexist in this amphitheater as residents would cohabit with refugees. As if they were lifelong friends. Since I had little time (a day and a half), I made simple lines and used the orange to emphasize the details.

I especially wanted to represent multiculturalism and living together without being afraid of the other. »

-Sara Fratini

THE SCREENING:

FACES PLACES

by Agnes Varda and JR (France)
Agnes Varda, whose unique cinematic vision since 1950 has won her a loyal crowd of enthusiastic cinema lovers around the world, and the iconic photographer and artist JR, who has more than a million followers on Instagram, seem to have both more in common than one might imagine.

FRIDAY JUNE 15 – LECENTOCITTÀ SPACE, CROTONE (KR)

We arrived at Crotone, welcomed by our friends from the association Il Barrio, to organize a screening with the LeCentoCittà circle. The movie was really appreciated and the meeting of the members of the circle was really enriching.
The “LeCentocittà” circle was born at the request of the ARCI Crotone: having a place, a space to organize association meetings, promoting citizen aggregation.
Always linked to the need of the ARCI Crotone to have a unique place in which to locate all its activities, the headquarters of the LeCentocittà circle will change premises. And it is in that context that a group of migrants created on their initiative an association that is going to use the current space of the circle as headquarters.

THE SCREENING:

WALLAY

by Berni Goldblat (Switzerland)
Ady is thirteen and grew up in the French suburbs. When one summer, after yet another fight, he is sent by his father to relatives in Burkina Faso, Ady realizes that his family and Africa are very different from what he imagined and that he did not go on a vacation.

SATURDAY JUNE 16 – CENTRAL LAB 7CANALI ‘A. EBOLI’, PAOLA (CS)

We went to Paola first of all for Boris. We met him during the first edition of CinemAmbulante, when we organized a film school for Italians and refugees. He was among the participants. Then he created CortoCircuiti, an association which brings together young people wishing to offer, make accessible culture in their own city. Unfortunately, due to bad weather, few people attended the screening. We suspect also and above all that in Consenza the Serie B was playing. Finally, they won and we, between friends, watched a beautiful movie and wrote down in our memories these warm events, while realizing the importance of staying in contact and active.

THE SCREENING:

SWAGGER

by Olivier Babinet (France)
Between documentary and fiction, the film takes us into the surprising spirits of eleven teenagers, from various origins, growing up in one of the most disadvantaged Parisian suburbs, in which the “French” do not set foot. A series of portraits that transcribe hopes, fears and everyday life.

SUNDAY JUNE 17 - LA PIAZZA, CLETO (CS)

In Cleto, many of us have been staying at the Associazione La Piazza. We watched together some short films funded by MigrArti in previous years, listened to the presentation of MigrArti by Paolo Masini, ate good Calabrian products prepared by Cletesi mothers, danced with Moussa Ndao, Senegalese musician living in Cosenza, and finally demonstrated that with very little, if everyone gets started, it is possible to move mountains.
Unfortunately, local institutions were absent. Unfortunately for them of course. Because we had a great moment of joy and sharing, the memories of which will remain etched in our memories.

THE SCREENING:

CORTI MigrArti

« Ambaradan » by Paolo Negro and Amin Nour
« Interno 4 Safari/Cirillo » by Paolo Bianchini
« La Recita » by Guido Lombardi

MONDAY JUNE 18 – TEMESA CAMPUS, AMANTEA (CS)

We liked the idea of using the theater of Amantea, all the more so since there had never been an artistic director or long-term project, since its inauguration, not to mention any budget. So, we took our projector, our projection screen and our cassettes to give the city a free screening session in a theatre that should belong to everyone.

THE SCREENING:

SACRED WATER

by Olivier Jourdain (Belgium)
Guided by the voice of Vestine, a radio host, and of Rwandan men and women, this film shows us the search for gushing water from the female body. “Sacred Water” humorously and spontaneously reveals the mystery of female pleasure.

TUESDAY JUNE 19 - VIA LUNGOMARE, BADOLATO MARINA (CZ)

The day at Badolato was one of the most magical guarimbera days: CinemAmbulante returned to Badolato for the Festa del Rifugiato (Refugee day) which was organized by the beach in the premises of our friend and local contact Guerino Nisticò, in collaboration with all associations, committees, the Red Cross, the CIR, the municipal junta and active Italians citizens.
We found old friends and made new ones, we played music and tasted Italian-Pakistani recipes, we took carefree rain baths and celebrated Senegal’s victory over Poland.
Then we screened a film of those who make a room full of humanity tremble with emotion.
The visionary mayor of Badolato, who has been since the 1990s close to migration issues, sent a strong message to everyone: “You are welcome in Italy”.

THE SCREENING:

HUMAN FLOW

by Ai Wei Wei (China)
The Chinese artist stood behind the camera to add to our exhibition a documentary that tells the story of the lives of migrants and refugees. A journey of hope at the heart of 23 countries of the world, from Afghanistan to the Sicilian coasts, to the borders between Mexico and the United States.

WEDNESDAY JUNE 20 – CASTELLO SVEVO, COSENZA (CS)

For three years, the marvelous Castello Svevo Cosenza has been welcoming us so that we can bring some Guarimbero cinema to it. This is how we met Roberta and Erminia, the organizers CINEPRESI a cinematographic circle which every Wednesday of July offers Cosenza the best of independent cinema. With the screening of FELICITÉ, we made a preview inspired by their calendar.

It is always a pleasure to meet them, discuss cinema critically and spend time together.

THE SCREENING:

FELICITÉ

by Alain Gomis (Senegal)
A mother is trying by all means to recover the necessary amount of money to avoid the amputation of her son’s leg. But the events do not go as planned.

THURSDAY JUNE 21 – PIAZZA CALAVECCHIA, AMANTEA (CS)

To conclude CinemAmbulante 2018, we screened the short films developed within Kino Guarimba by the Dutch and Italian directors, who for 12 days in Amantea, designed and shot audiovisual works.

Kino Guarimba is a cinema residency which, for its first edition, involved around twenty young people from the Netherlands and Italy, but also young Nigerians, Gambiens and Senegalese living in Amantea. It was a winning bet that set the city in motion during a slack season. A good part of the success of this experience is linked to the involvement of local businesses who became our partners in the accomplishment of the project.

There is no doubt that we will repeat this experience next year, seeking to involve even more people, partners and residents.
