Filmmakers arrived in Amantea, Calabria, to begin this journey of artistic collaboration and exchange. This year\u2019s Kino was made possible through the partnership with <\/span><strong>CinemAmbulante<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><strong>Caribe At\u00f3mico Film Festival<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Venezuela) and <\/span><strong>MyAirBridge<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On September 10, <strong>47 filmmakers<\/strong> from <strong>4 continents<\/strong> and<strong> 28 different<\/strong> countries arrived to participate in a 12-day film residency to conceive, shoot, and edit their short films. At the end of Kino Guarimba, the 47 filmmakers<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> presented<strong> 36 films<\/strong>.<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_video link=&#8221;https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=LjZS5KT_Jdw&#8221; css=&#8221;&#8221;][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>The Program<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kino Guarimba is a twelve day film training program and offers professional training workshops, exposure to cultural events, and encourages collaboration between the filmmakers as well as the locals of Amantea.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first days of the Kino are organised to facilitate connection amongst the participants and to familiarise them with the town of Amantea and its rich history and culture.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On day one of Kino, the participants arrived all throughout the day and were given the new edition of the Kino Tote bag: <em>Eat the Rich <\/em>designed by Mikel Murillo. In it, were typical Calabrian products from our sponsors including <strong>Amarelli<\/strong> liquorice, stuffed figs from F.lli Marano and artisanal pistachio cream from <strong>Bar Sicoli<\/strong>. <strong>Moleskine Foundation<\/strong> also supported the residency through gifting us notebooks for each participant to use during the residency. On each notebook, we placed a <strong>Kino Guarimba<\/strong> sticker designed by Valeria Weerasinghe.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After they were taken to one of the <strong>thirteen apartments<\/strong> we rented for the residents, they had the opportunity to explore the town and explore the beach during the day, and meet some of their fellow filmmakers. At 20:30 the Meet &amp; Greet Dinner began in <strong>Il Terrenito<\/strong>. Here all the participants had the chance to mingle and officially meet one another. The dinner was kindly provided by <strong>Giancarlo Suriano<\/strong>, a caterer who sources his ingredients locally in Calabria. The dinner was paired with red wine made from the grapes of Giulio&#8217;s late <strong>Nonna Saveria<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/2&#8243;][vc_single_image image=&#8221;5387&#8243; img_size=&#8221;full&#8221; css=&#8221;&#8221;][\/vc_column][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/2&#8243;][vc_single_image image=&#8221;5389&#8243; img_size=&#8221;full&#8221; css=&#8221;&#8221;][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Day two of the Kino began with a typical Italian breakfast at <strong>Lido Azzurro<\/strong>: a cornetto and a cappuccino. After breakfast we ran a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>speed dating exercise<\/strong> with the filmmakers and the musicians from the <strong>Music Camp<\/strong>. In the four rounds of speed dating, the young professionals had one minute to talk to each other, share their ideas and wishes for the residency. It also gave both groups to meet and offer up their skills and plan collaborations.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This was an exercise in honing their <strong>pitching skills<\/strong> and a chance to explore ideas with one another. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The day continued with lunch at <strong>Cantina Amarcord 1985<\/strong> to taste traditional Calabrian cuisine and wines, and to facilitate conversation and connection with one another. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/2&#8243;][vc_single_image image=&#8221;5391&#8243; img_size=&#8221;full&#8221; css=&#8221;&#8221;][\/vc_column][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/2&#8243;][vc_single_image image=&#8221;5421&#8243; img_size=&#8221;full&#8221; css=&#8221;&#8221;][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the evening, director <strong>Giulio Vita<\/strong> took the participants on a tour of Amantea, through the historical city centre and to the ancient ruins at the mountain top. This allowed the participants to scout locations for their films.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After this brief hike in the Calabrian evening sun, the tour concluded at <strong>Bar Sicoli<\/strong>, renowned for its famous pistachio gelato. Afterwards, everyone went to have pizza for dinner at Pizzeria Canossa.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/2&#8243;][vc_single_image image=&#8221;5395&#8243; img_size=&#8221;full&#8221; css=&#8221;&#8221;][\/vc_column][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/2&#8243;][vc_single_image image=&#8221;5397&#8243; img_size=&#8221;full&#8221; css=&#8221;&#8221;][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The fourth day began and ended with masterclasses taught by industry professionals residency tutors. All 47 filmmakers attended the four masterclasses throughout the day. The first two were taught at\u00a0<strong>Lido Azzurro<\/strong>, and the second two in the conference room of<strong> La Piccola Biblioteca di Amantea<\/strong>, opened in August 2024.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It began with <strong>\u2018How to Organize a Kino Production&#8217;<\/strong>\u00a0by residency tutor <strong>Oscar Pe\u00f1a Gonz\u00e1lez<\/strong>, Spanish cinematographer with onset experience in Spain Italy and <strong>Latin America<\/strong>. Here, Oscar explained how to best organise a small production team and tips on managing actors, locations and production plans.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This was followed by <\/span><strong>\u2018Live Sound Recording\u2019<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Venezuelan<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> musician <\/span><strong>Fran Rousset<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Not only did he share his expertise on sound recording, but has been an artist in residency at La Guarimba throughout the summer, recording his second EP. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fran gave an overview on how to properly use the sound equipment, record ambient sounds and dialogue to create a successful soundscape for a film. <\/span><\/p>\n[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_single_image image=&#8221;5443&#8243; img_size=&#8221;full&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221; css=&#8221;&#8221;][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the afternoon, director and editor <strong>Fortunato Valente<\/strong> gave a masterclass on <strong>\u201cThe Basics of Editing\u201d<\/strong> to teach curious filmmakers more about editing and how to use DaVinci Resolve. This gave new editors the confidence to practice this new skill and experiment further with the elements of post-production.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Fran Rousset<\/strong>\u00a0gave a second masterclass on <strong>\u201cPost Productions of Sound\u201d<\/strong>. He gave an overview of the sound equipment and tips on naming sound files to stay organised throughout production.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/2&#8243;][vc_single_image image=&#8221;5401&#8243; img_size=&#8221;full&#8221; css=&#8221;&#8221;][\/vc_column][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/2&#8243;][vc_single_image image=&#8221;5403&#8243; img_size=&#8221;full&#8221; css=&#8221;&#8221;][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To break up the information density of the masterclasses, there was also a <strong>popular casting<\/strong> call where aspiring local actors, aged <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>7 to 82<\/strong>, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">had the opportunity to introduce themselves and present a skill in front of the directors. Some actors recited monologues while others expressed their genre preferences. The importance of the popular casting is twofold: for the locals, it opens the door to working on a film set and meeting international filmmakers, and for the filmmakers, it gives them another opportunity to deepen their connections with the people of Amantea and its culture, lending to greater authenticity in their work.<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/2&#8243;][vc_single_image image=&#8221;5409&#8243; img_size=&#8221;full&#8221; css=&#8221;&#8221;][\/vc_column][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/2&#8243;][vc_single_image image=&#8221;5407&#8243; img_size=&#8221;full&#8221; css=&#8221;&#8221;][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The 13th of September was the last day of scheduled Kino activities before the residents began filming. Everyone met at <strong>La Piccola Biblioteca di Amantea<\/strong> for coffee provided by <strong>Caff\u00e8 Guglielmo<\/strong> and cornetti from <strong>Bar Caruso<\/strong> before pitching their film ideas.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Each filmmaker gave a brief synopsis of their film, its genre, their role, the roles they still need filled and how many days of shooting would be required. Here, <strong>34 of the 47 filmmakers<\/strong> pitched their own ideas or ideas they collaborated on with others, with a total of<strong> 38 pitched ideas<\/strong>. In this edition of the Kino, the filmmakers pitched many ideas from, folklore and fairytales to documentaries about migration.<\/span><\/p>\n[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/2&#8243;][vc_gallery interval=&#8221;3&#8243; images=&#8221;5423,5425&#8243; img_size=&#8221;full&#8221; css=&#8221;&#8221;][\/vc_column][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/2&#8243;][vc_gallery interval=&#8221;3&#8243; images=&#8221;5413,5411&#8243; img_size=&#8221;full&#8221; css=&#8221;&#8221;][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]<strong><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">GUARIMBA PICNIC: A LISTENING PARTY<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For the last three months, Fran has been an artist in residency at La Guarimba, working on creating his EP <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">El perro en la iglesia\u00a0<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">under his artist name <strong>Froussio<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. His eight new songs flow between the edges of post-pop, experimental minimalism and dream ambient music.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Underneath the lemon tree in Il Terrenito, Fran performed his original music, assisted by Xenia Nema, sound technician. Both the filmmakers and musicians from the Music Camp came to the performance, lounged on picnic blankets and enjoyed their dinners in the grass. Fran\u2019s music was met with open ears and enthusiasm, and cheers for an encore. After the performance, everyone remained, chatting, singing and dancing to Xenia\u2019s playlist.\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_gallery interval=&#8221;3&#8243; images=&#8221;5415,5419&#8243; img_size=&#8221;full&#8221; css=&#8221;&#8221;][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]<span style=\"font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">CALCIO<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-family: georgia, palatino, serif;\">In the evening of the 16th we organised a friendly football match: the filmmakers vs the staff. This was a great opportunity to bond and let off some steam and relax from the gruelling film schedules. In a game of 6v6, the two teams played for an hour. The match was close, but in the end the staff won! <\/span><\/p>\n[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_gallery interval=&#8221;3&#8243; images=&#8221;5536,5540,5538&#8243; img_size=&#8221;full&#8221; css=&#8221;&#8221;][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]<span style=\"font-size: 14pt; color: #333333;\"><strong>THE FILMING PROCESS<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #333333;\">From the 13th of September to the 20th, the young professionals began shooting their projects. Following the philosophy of the Kino method, we did not interfere with this process, encouraging them to form teams themselves for their projects, and letting collaborations arise organically and spontaneously.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kino Guarimba provided basic sound recording equipment, lights, reflectors and tripods to be shared amongst all <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">49<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> participants. Oscar and Fran provided additional guidance to the filmmakers about the equipment they would need for each shoot and how to best use it for the scenes they had in mind.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The filmmakers shot their films all throughout Amantea. In the historic center, at the tower ruins, the beach and in their homes for indoor scenes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_gallery type=&#8221;flexslider_slide&#8221; interval=&#8221;3&#8243; images=&#8221;5482,5484,5478,5480,5474&#8243; img_size=&#8221;full&#8221; css=&#8221;&#8221;][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>THE FINAL SCREENING<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">After <strong>12 days<\/strong> of collaboration, shooting their films, and editing, <strong>Kino Guarimba<\/strong> ended with a screening of all <strong>36 films<\/strong>\u00a0that were submitted. Prior to the screening, a masterclass on \u201cFilm Distribution\u201d was taught by <strong>Giulio Vita<\/strong> and in collaboration with <strong>Caribe At\u00f3mico Film Festival<\/strong> in <strong>Venezuela<\/strong>. In this masterclass, Giulio discussed his process of selecting films and shared his knowledge and advice for working with distributors and choosing the right film festivals to submit to.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The films were screened in <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Il Terrenito<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Amantea on 21 September, where all the participants, actors and locals were invited to come watch.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The final screening was attended by <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">135 people<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/2&#8243;][vc_single_image image=&#8221;5549&#8243; img_size=&#8221;full&#8221; css=&#8221;&#8221;][\/vc_column][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/2&#8243;][vc_single_image image=&#8221;5551&#8243; img_size=&#8221;full&#8221; css=&#8221;&#8221;][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>THE PARTICIPANTS<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Forty-seven participants<\/strong> came from all over the world, forming a diverse group of filmmakers. From<strong> four continents<\/strong>, all different ages and backgrounds, each participant brings a unique perspective to the whole group, united by their desire to share their knowledge, collaborate and create together. <\/span><\/p>\n[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_single_image image=&#8221;5486&#8243; img_size=&#8221;full&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221; css=&#8221;&#8221;][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In order to have a wider reach for our film festival, we carried out promotional work through multiple channels. We successfully requested for Kino Guarimba to be promoted in their newsletters to students. In addition, we were guests at <strong><span class=\"il\">Baltic Women<\/span>\u00a0in Film Mentorship<\/strong> to present the residency to their participants.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. At festival markets such as <strong>Clermont-Ferrand<\/strong>, and <strong>Winterthur<\/strong> we organised appointments with representatives of film institutes around the world to discuss our project and our mission. Lastly, social media was an important tool for promoting Kino Guarimba in collaboration with our partners.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the end we had <strong>47 filmmakers from 28 different countries<\/strong>: Argentina, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, China, Colombia, Egypt, England, Eritrea, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lebanon, Lithuania, Mexico, the Netherlands, Peru, Portugal, Russia,\u00a0 Spain, Turkey, Uruguay, and the USA. <\/span><\/p>\n[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/2&#8243;][vc_single_image image=&#8221;5461&#8243; img_size=&#8221;full&#8221; css=&#8221;&#8221;][\/vc_column][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/2&#8243;][vc_single_image image=&#8221;5463&#8243; img_size=&#8221;full&#8221; css=&#8221;&#8221;][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This year, we had a majority of women filmmakers, at<strong> 61.7%<\/strong> to <strong>38.3%<\/strong> men filmmakers.\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_single_image image=&#8221;5371&#8243; img_size=&#8221;full&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221; css=&#8221;&#8221;][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <strong>average age<\/strong> of the participants was<strong> 28 years<\/strong>, with a median of 27 years. The most represented age range was <strong>18-24<\/strong> years old with 12 people, 27 people between the ages of <strong>25-30<\/strong>, 5 people between <strong>31-35<\/strong> and 3 people above 35 years old.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_single_image image=&#8221;5374&#8243; img_size=&#8221;full&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221; css=&#8221;&#8221;][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During the selection process, we also consider the candidates profiles and roles. From young students, just beginning their career, to professional filmmakers, each person was chosen for the knowledge they could bring to the group. This Kino provides the opportunity for new filmmakers to make their first steps within the industry, and acts as a respite for those already working in the industry, allowing them to experience a community where they can immerse themselves in the creative process. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Filmmakers make up a significant percentage of the participants, but the residency&#8217;s training activities allowed everyone to experience different roles. From a survey sent to the participants, about<strong> 50% of them said that the worked in a role they had not worked in previously.<\/strong><\/p>\n[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kino Guarimba is a living project in which each edition we learn something new. It is a process of trial and error, and we aim to develop the program so that each edition is better than the last. We also aim to understand the impact of the project on the participants and the local community of Amantea.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For this reason we collect both qualitative and quantitative data through questionnaires, forms and observation. For the international artists, we look at the educational impact of the residency. For the people and community of Amantea, we look at the social, cultural and economic impacts.\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_single_image image=&#8221;5476&#8243; img_size=&#8221;full&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221; css=&#8221;&#8221;][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]<span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>THE EDUCATIONAL IMPACT ON THE PARTICIPANTS<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This film residency follows the pedagogical methods as laid out by <strong>Non-Formal Education, Cooperative Learning<\/strong> and the <strong>Montessori School<\/strong>. These twelve days of conceiving, shooting and editing films are a compact and intensive learning journey. Therefore these teaching methods are used as they encourage <strong>collaboration<\/strong>, <strong>sharing<\/strong> resources and spaces, and it gives them freedom and <strong>agency<\/strong> over the <strong>creative process<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the selection process, we aim to choose applicants with <strong>diverse artistic profiles<\/strong>, from directors, cinematographers, foley artists to editors. Each applicant has a different motivation for applying. Some want to try their hand at a new role, or practice a new skill, and Kino Guarimba provides the perfect opportunity for this creative experimentation. We choose applicants that are all in different points of their lives and their careers. Some are just beginning their studies or starting their career in film, some are seeking to reinvigorate their creative side, and others are looking for a respite from the demanding routine of a nine-to-five job. In Amantea, the participants have the chance to explore and reflect on their creative sides.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Before the filmmakers begin with their creative collaboration, we organise events for them to meet and socialise. From the Meet and Greet dinner, to their shared housing, this is key for making connections and <strong>establishing bonds<\/strong> with one another. Although some may have varying, and sometimes opposing, points of view we encourage the participants to open a dialogue and try to understand one another.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The focus of this film residency is on the process rather than the outcome. The goal is for the participants to take advantage of this opportunity to experiment, try out different roles and to allow their creativity to emerge. Making mistakes and learning from them is integral to this process, and we encourage the participants not to look at failure as a negative, but as an opportunity for learning and reflection.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>THE SOCIAL AND CULTURAL IMPACT ON THE COMMUNITY<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Amantea is a small town of 14,000 people on the <strong>Tyrrhenian coast of Calabria in Southern Italy<\/strong>. This September <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">forty-seven<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0filmmakers arrived in our little town for Kino Guarimba, where we encouraged them to explore the town and its people. We want the film residents to engage with the locals, the places and stories Amantea has to offer, transforming the streets, squares, historic center and beaches into <strong>large open-air sets<\/strong>. It is important that they accept Amantea as their host, and do not form an isolated bubble in which to operate. By directly involving Amanteans in the making of their short films, they are not only empowering themselves as filmmakers, but they are helping to <strong>empower the community<\/strong>. The skills they hone in order to organise a production team, communicate with their local actors in Italian and create bonds with them, is something that the filmmakers will carry with them forever.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Throughout the Kino, Amantea undergoes the process of <strong>urban revitalization<\/strong>. The filmmakers explore the town and see beauty in it, transforming even abandoned and degraded locations into the backdrop of their films, inviting Amanteans to view their home in a different light. These places become active protagonists in their narratives and give new meaning to these locations.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kino Guarimba helps to re-establish a connection between locals, culture and art through film. This creates a sense of <strong>belonging and pride<\/strong> in the community as people from all around the world come to Amantea for the experience of making a short film. This process allows the people of Amantea to see their town and their stories presented on the big screen.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The arrival of filmmakers from around the world allows for increased social and cultural capital of Amantea through the promotion of cultural and artistic diversity. During the 12 day residency, Amanteans share their home with the filmmakers; some of them actors while some open their businesses for filming.<\/span><\/p>\n[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/2&#8243;][vc_single_image image=&#8221;5488&#8243; img_size=&#8221;full&#8221; css=&#8221;&#8221;][\/vc_column][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/2&#8243;][vc_single_image image=&#8221;5490&#8243; img_size=&#8221;full&#8221; css=&#8221;&#8221;][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>THE ECONOMIC IMPACT ON THE TERRITORY<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The budget for the eleventh edition of Kino Guarimba was<\/span><strong> \u20ac23,000<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. From this, we invested a portion into purchasing locally produced products, the dinner and lunches organised for the participants, the rental of the apartments for 60 people for 12 nights, compensation for the Calabrian project collaborators from Reggio Calabria, Amantea and Vibo Valentia, as well as the meals for the team, materials used for the execution of events and general office expenses.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We have also analysed the indirect financial impact of the residency, which is equally important. At the end of the residency we sent a survey to the participants for feedback on their experience during the Kino. The impact of their presence is felt even moreso, as September, in terms of tourism, is a quiet month in comparison to August for example.\u00a0 At beach bar and restaurant Lido Azzurro, there was always a group of participants, discussing their films and working, eating a meal or simply enjoying the view. Pizzeria Canossa was a favourite of the group and Cantina Amarcord was often filled with the filmmakers socialising and having a drink.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With the information we gathered through the survey, we were able to estimate the average spending in Amantea of the participants during the twelve day Kino. This data includes food, drinks, souvenirs and purchases made for their films such as props. This data gave us an indication of the average expenditure of each participant at <\/span><strong>\u20ac520 <\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">each, making a total of<strong> \u20ac25,000<\/strong> to Amantean businesses.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This data demonstrates just one way in which the Kino positively impacts Amantea and its businesses. It also has positive effects on the image of Amantea and the region, it attracts sustainable tourism without compromising authentic storytelling and experience in Calabria.
