From 10 to 21 September 2026<\/strong>, La Guarimba hosted the fourteenth edition<\/strong> of Kino Guarimba, a film training programme for filmmakers from around the world. The filmmakers arrived in Amantea, Calabria, to begin a journey of artistic collaboration and exchange. This year’s edition was organized by CinemAmbulante<\/strong> and La Guarimba, and was made possible thanks to the collaboration of Italia Patria della Bellezza<\/strong>, Caribe At\u00f3mico Film Festival<\/strong> (Venezuela), MyAirBridge<\/strong>, Moleskine Foundation<\/strong>, Caff\u00e8 Guglielmo<\/strong>, and Lido Azzurro<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

On 10 September<\/strong>, 47 filmmakers<\/strong> from 5 continents<\/strong> and 24 different countries<\/strong> arrived to take part in a 12-day<\/strong> filmmaking residency to conceive, shoot, and edit their short films. By the end of Kino Guarimba, the 47 participants<\/strong> had delivered 42 films<\/strong>, for a total of 2 hours, 48 minutes, and 45 seconds<\/strong> of cinema.<\/p>\n[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_video link=”https:\/\/youtu.be\/cwitVvcXrCk”][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]\n

THE PROGRAMME<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Kino Guarimba is a twelve-day film training programme that offers professional workshops, participation in cultural events, and encourages collaboration between the filmmakers and the residents of Amantea.<\/p>\n

The first days of the Kino are organized to help participants get to know one another and to familiarize them with the town of Amantea and its rich history and culture.<\/p>\n

On 10 September<\/strong>, the first day, participants arrived throughout the day and registered in person at La Guarimba’s office on Via Mazzini<\/strong>. They were then taken to their apartments, where they lived together as a group for the whole residency, and had the chance to explore the town and the beach and meet their fellow filmmakers. At 8:30 pm<\/strong>, the welcome dinner began at Il Terrenito<\/strong>, where everyone could socialize and officially get to know one another.<\/p>\n

All activities took place at Territorio Guarimba<\/strong>, our association’s multifunctional space, which includes Il Terrenito<\/strong>, our outdoor space, the offices, and La Piccola Biblioteca di Amantea<\/strong>. The library houses a recording studio, a study room that this year welcomed the filmmakers during editing, and a children’s space that doubles as a conference room for the association’s activities.<\/p>\n

KINO GUARIMBA AND THE MUSIC CAMP<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The September edition has a special feature: it takes place on the same days as the Music Camp<\/strong>, our residency dedicated to music, and shares some moments of the programme with it. For the filmmakers, this is an extra opportunity to meet musicians and collaborate with them on the soundtracks and sound of their films.<\/p>\n

On 12 September<\/strong>, we organized a Jam Session<\/strong> together with the Music Camp participants. We set up a range of instruments on the stage at Il Terrenito, and people stopped by to play, have fun, and spend time together. It was a moment of sharing and getting to know each other between musicians and filmmakers.<\/p>\n[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1\/3″][vc_single_image image=”33853″ img_size=”full”][\/vc_column][vc_column width=”1\/3″][vc_single_image image=”33855″ img_size=”full”][\/vc_column][vc_column width=”1\/3″][vc_single_image image=”33857″ img_size=”full”][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]\n

11 September<\/strong> began with breakfast at Lido Azzurro<\/strong>, followed by introductions and a speed-dating exercise among the filmmakers. Over several rounds, participants had a few minutes to talk to one another, share ideas, skills, and wishes for the residency, and start imagining possible collaborations. It was an exercise to sharpen presentation skills and an opportunity to explore ideas together.<\/p>\n

The day continued with lunch at Cantina Amarcord<\/strong>, to taste traditional Calabrian food and wine and encourage conversation among the participants.<\/p>\n

In the late afternoon, the La Guarimba team took participants on a guided tour of Amantea, through the historic centre and the town’s most evocative spots, a chance to start scouting locations for their films.<\/p>\n[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1\/2″][vc_single_image image=”33849″ img_size=”full”][\/vc_column][vc_column width=”1\/2″][vc_single_image image=”33851″ img_size=”full”][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_gallery images=”33912″ img_size=”full” interval=”3″][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]\n

12 September<\/strong> was dedicated to masterclasses, led by industry professionals and the residency tutors, attended by all the filmmakers. The day began with “The Rules of the Game,” in which the residency’s trainers introduced the rules and spirit of the programme, followed by a masterclass on distribution led by artistic director Giulio Vita<\/strong> in collaboration with Caribe At\u00f3mico Film Festival<\/strong>, the Caracas festival founded by La Guarimba, with advice on how to circulate one’s films and choose the right festivals.<\/p>\n

Next, sound tutor Fran Rousset<\/strong> led a masterclass on recording and sound, covering the correct use of equipment, recording ambiences and dialogue, and how to build an effective soundscape. Finally, director and editor Fortunato Valente<\/strong> held the masterclass on editing, designed for those who wanted to learn more about this stage and feel more confident editing their own film.<\/p>\n[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1\/2″][vc_single_image image=”33859″ img_size=”full” alignment=”center”][\/vc_column][vc_column width=”1\/2″][vc_single_image image=”33914″ img_size=”full”][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]\n

13 September<\/strong> was the last day of shared activities before filming began. Everyone gathered at La Piccola Biblioteca di Amantea<\/strong> for coffee offered by Caff\u00e8 Guglielmo<\/strong> and a visit to the library, followed by a “Sharing Impressions” exercise. Instead of a traditional pitching session, we chose to have participants share what they would like to do and their impressions of the place around them, to avoid competition and the rush to deliver an idea just for the sake of it. A way of letting ideas emerge from listening to one another and from contact with the local area.<\/p>\n

At midday, the open community casting call was held: 18<\/strong> aspiring actors and actresses from Amantea, aged between 9 and 49<\/strong>, had the chance to introduce themselves and show their skills in front of the filmmakers. Children and young people turned out in particularly large numbers: 13 of the 18<\/strong> participants were between 9 and 14<\/strong> years old. The community casting call matters in two ways: for local residents, it opens the door to working on a film set and meeting international filmmakers; for the filmmakers, it’s an opportunity to deepen their ties with the community of Amantea and its culture, lending greater authenticity to their work.<\/p>\n[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1\/2″][vc_gallery images=”33861″ img_size=”full” interval=”3″][\/vc_column][vc_column width=”1\/2″][vc_gallery images=”33863″ img_size=”full” interval=”3″][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]\n

THE SHOOTING PROCESS<\/strong><\/h3>\n

From 14 to 19 September<\/strong>, participants filmed their projects. Following the philosophy of the Kino method, we did not interfere with the process, encouraging the filmmakers to form their own crews independently and letting collaborations arise organically and spontaneously.<\/p>\n

Kino Guarimba provided basic equipment for sound recording, lighting, reflectors, tripods, and editing stations, to be shared among all participants. Simple rules applied to the use of the equipment: loans of a maximum of 24 hours<\/strong>, priority to those who had not yet used the equipment, and prompt returns, so as not to compromise other productions. The filmmakers shot all over Amantea: in the historic centre, on the beach, in the streets and squares, in local businesses, and in apartments for indoor scenes.<\/p>\n

The films were made with the contribution of local residents: local actors appeared in 21 of the 42<\/strong> films delivered (50%<\/strong>).<\/p>\n[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_gallery images=”33865″ img_size=”full” interval=”3″ type=”flexslider_slide”][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]\n

NEW FOR 2026: THE FEEDBACK SESSIONS<\/strong><\/h3>\n

This year we introduced something new: a day dedicated to Feedback Sessions<\/strong>, on Saturday 19 September<\/strong> at our offices. Participants were able to show their work in progress to the residency tutors (Oscar Pe\u00f1a<\/strong>, Giulio Vita<\/strong>, Fran Rousset<\/strong>, and Fortunato Valente<\/strong>) and receive detailed feedback to improve it before submission. 13 projects<\/strong> signed up.<\/p>\n

In the final survey, those who took part in the sessions found them very useful: some received precise notes on colour and on their approach to future projects, some regained the distance needed to look at their footage objectively, and some understood how to revise the film’s structure or work better with sound. One participant said the notes she received were direct and focused on the most important points, allowing her to refine the project with small adjustments. Another said the sessions gave her the encouragement she needed to finish her film.<\/p>\n[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_gallery images=”33867″ img_size=”full” interval=”3″][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]\n

SPECIAL MOMENTS<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The young filmmakers of Amantea<\/strong><\/p>\n

Some children from Amantea made their own short films and presented them to the audience, including young Maria Emanuela Delizia<\/strong>. Their films were screened at Cinema Sicoli<\/strong>, alongside those of the other participants.<\/p>\n

The beach cleanup<\/strong><\/p>\n

The day before departure, a group of participants organized a beach cleanup on their own initiative, a way of giving Amantea back some of the care they had received during their stay.<\/p>\n

The return of Sofia Turco<\/strong><\/p>\n

Calabrian by origin, Sofia Turco<\/strong> now studies filmmaking in Rome. Her connection to La Guarimba dates back to 2014, when as a child she took part in a workshop on light and shadow during the second edition of La Guarimba International Film Festival<\/strong>. Twelve years later, this September, she was selected for Kino Guarimba<\/strong>, the filmmaking residency that brings together fifty people in Amantea to explore the dynamics of collective creativity. Sofia thus returned to the town that had seen her take her first steps into filmmaking, this time in the role of director, sound technician, and camerawoman, among many other tasks within the production. Her journey testifies to the long-term value of the festival’s educational work, and we hope that more and more children who grew up with La Guarimba will one day return as directors.<\/p>\n[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1\/2″][vc_single_image image=”33917″ img_size=”full”][\/vc_column][vc_column width=”1\/2″][vc_single_image image=”33919″ img_size=”full”][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_single_image image=”33898″ img_size=”full” alignment=”center”][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]\n

THE HANDOVER AND FINAL SCREENING<\/strong><\/h3>\n

On 21 September<\/strong>, between 9 and 11 am<\/strong>, each filmmaker personally delivered their film to La Guarimba’s office. A total of 42 films<\/strong> were delivered, with a combined running time of 2 hours, 48 minutes, and 45 seconds<\/strong> (an average of about 4 minutes per film). Eight filmmakers (19%)<\/strong> directed their first film.<\/p>\n

At 3:00 pm<\/strong>, the films were screened at Cinema Sicoli<\/strong>, with all participants, actors, and residents of Amantea invited to attend. The theatre filled to the very last seat. The day ended at 7:00 pm<\/strong> at Il Terrenito<\/strong> with a closing moment and farewells.<\/p>\n[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1\/3″][vc_single_image image=”33902″ img_size=”full”][\/vc_column][vc_column width=”1\/3″][vc_single_image image=”33910″ img_size=”full”][\/vc_column][vc_column width=”1\/3″][vc_single_image image=”33904″ img_size=”full”][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]\n

THE PARTICIPANTS<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Forty-seven participants<\/strong> from all over the world formed a diverse group of filmmakers. Coming from five continents<\/strong>, with different ages and backgrounds, each participant brought a unique perspective to the group, united by the desire to share knowledge, collaborate, and create together.<\/p>\n[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_single_image image=”33937″ img_size=”full” alignment=”center”][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]\n

In the end we had 47 filmmakers<\/strong> from 24 different countries<\/strong>: Argentina, Armenia, Brazil, China, Colombia, South Korea, Denmark, France, Georgia, Germany, Haiti, Italy, Lebanon, Lithuania, Mexico, Montenegro, the Netherlands, Peru, the United Kingdom, the United States, Tunisia, Uganda, Ukraine, and Venezuela.<\/p>\n[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1\/2″][vc_single_image image=”33874″ img_size=”full”][\/vc_column][vc_column width=”1\/2″][vc_single_image image=”33876″ img_size=”full”][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]\n

Once again this year we had a clear majority of women filmmakers, at 70.2%<\/strong>, compared to 25.5%<\/strong> of male filmmakers. Two participants (4.3%<\/strong>) identified as non-binary or did not indicate a category.<\/p>\n[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_single_image image=”33906″ img_size=”full” alignment=”center”][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]\n

The average age of participants was 28<\/strong>, with a median of 26<\/strong>; the youngest was 19<\/strong> and the oldest 61<\/strong>. The 18 to 24 and 25 to 30 age groups were equally represented, with 17 people<\/strong> each, followed by 7 people<\/strong> aged 31 to 35 and 6 people<\/strong> over 35.<\/p>\n[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_single_image image=”33880″ img_size=”full” alignment=”center”][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]\n

During the selection process, we also considered candidates’ profiles and roles. From young students at the start of their careers to professional filmmakers, each person was chosen for the knowledge they could bring to the group. This Kino offers new filmmakers the chance to take their first steps in the field, and represents a break for those already working in the industry, allowing them to experience a community immersed in the creative process.<\/p>\n

Filmmakers make up a significant share of participants, but the residency’s training activities allowed everyone to try out different roles. In the final survey, answered by 36 of the 47 participants<\/strong>, two out of three (24 of 36<\/strong>) said they had worked in a role they had never taken on before: some acted as director of photography for the first time, others as editor, sound technician, assistant director, translator, or actor.<\/p>\n[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]\n

Kino Guarimba is a project in constant evolution, and with every edition we learn something new. It’s a process of trial and error, and our goal is to develop the programme so that each edition is better than the last. We also want to understand the project’s impact on the participants and on the local community of Amantea.<\/p>\n

For this reason, we collect both qualitative and quantitative data through questionnaires, forms, and observation. For the international artists, we assess the residency’s educational impact. For the people and community of Amantea, we look at the social, cultural, and economic impacts.<\/p>\n[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_single_image image=”33882″ img_size=”full” alignment=”center”][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]\n

THE EDUCATIONAL IMPACT ON PARTICIPANTS<\/strong><\/h3>\n

This filmmaking residency follows the pedagogical methods of Non-Formal Education, Cooperative Learning, and the Montessori Method. These twelve days<\/strong> of conceiving, shooting, and editing films represent a compact and intensive learning journey. These teaching methods are used because they encourage collaboration and the sharing of resources and spaces, and they give participants freedom and autonomy in the creative process.<\/p>\n

In the selection process, we try to choose candidates with diverse artistic profiles, from directors and cinematographers to sound artists and editors. Each candidate has a different motivation for taking part: some want to try a new role or practise a new skill, others are at the start of their studies or career, and others are looking to reinvigorate their creative side or take a break from the routine of a nine-to-five job.<\/p>\n

Before the filmmakers begin their creative collaboration, we organize events for them to meet and socialize. From the welcome dinner to shared accommodation, this is a fundamental part of building connections and bonds between them. Although some may hold different, and at times opposing, points of view, we encourage participants to open a dialogue and try to understand one another.<\/p>\n

The focus of this filmmaking residency is on the process, not the outcome. The goal is for participants to use this opportunity to experiment, try different roles, and let their creativity emerge. Making mistakes and learning from them is an integral part of this process, and we encourage participants not to see failure as something negative, but as an opportunity for learning and reflection.<\/p>\n

The final survey confirms the effectiveness of this approach. On the overall educational quality of the residency, participants gave an average rating of 4.2 out of 5<\/strong>, and 35 of 36<\/strong> said they would recommend Kino Guarimba to a colleague or friend. Asked what they had learned, the theme that came up most often was letting go of perfectionism: “learning to slow down in order to go faster,” trusting the process, and accepting that a film doesn’t need to be perfect to exist. Many also mentioned discovering they could do more than they thought, the importance of collaborating openly and honestly, and the richness of engaging with very different cultures and ways of making films. Some expressed a wish for the residency to last a few days longer, to experience the local culture more deeply.<\/p>\n[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_single_image image=”33908″ img_size=”full” alignment=”center”][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]\n

THE SOCIAL AND CULTURAL IMPACT ON THE COMMUNITY<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Amantea is a small town of 14,000 residents<\/strong> on the Tyrrhenian coast of Calabria, in southern Italy. This September, forty-seven filmmakers arrived in our small town for Kino Guarimba, where we encouraged them to explore the town and its people. We want the film residents to engage with the locals, the places, and the stories that Amantea has to offer, turning its streets, squares, historic centre, and beaches into large outdoor sets. It’s important that they embrace Amantea as their host rather than forming an isolated bubble to work within. By directly involving residents in the making of their short films, filmmakers not only grow as artists, they also help strengthen the community. The skills they hone in organizing a production crew, communicating with their local actors in Italian, and building relationships with them, are something the filmmakers will carry with them forever.<\/p>\n

During the Kino, Amantea undergoes a process of urban revitalization. The filmmakers explore the town and see beauty in it, turning even abandoned and run-down places into the backdrop of their films, and inviting residents to see their town in a new light. These places become active protagonists in their stories, giving new meaning to these locations.<\/p>\n

Kino Guarimba helps re-establish a connection between residents, culture, and art through cinema. This creates a sense of belonging and pride in the community, as people from all over the world come to Amantea for the experience of making a short film. This process allows the residents of Amantea to see their town and their stories projected on the big screen. This year, 21 of the 42 films (50%)<\/strong> involved local actors, and some children from Amantea became filmmakers in their own right.<\/p>\n

The survey shows that participants felt welcomed: asked “did you feel welcomed by the town and its people?,” the average rating was 4.7 out of 5<\/strong>, with 26 of 36<\/strong> responses at the highest score. In their comments, participants described Amantea as “big enough for everyone to make a film, but small enough to feel like home within two weeks,” and recalled neighbours who offered them local dishes, strangers who stopped to help even without a shared language, the sunsets over the sea, and the beach club staff. One participant highlighted the impact that La Guarimba and its library have on the town’s children, describing it as a safe space. Communication with the local population was rated an average of 3.8 out of 5<\/strong>, a figure that confirms the importance of having Italian speakers within the crews.<\/p>\n

For more than three out of four participants (28 of 36<\/strong>), it was their first time in Calabria, and for one in three (11 of 36<\/strong>), their first time in Italy. All 36 participants who answered the survey have shared, or intend to share, their experience in Amantea: most had already done so publicly, on social media or on a blog.<\/p>\n

During the 12 days<\/strong> of the residency, the residents of Amantea share their town with the filmmakers; some of them act, while others open their businesses or homes for filming.<\/p>\n[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1\/2″][vc_single_image image=”33886″ img_size=”full”][\/vc_column][vc_column width=”1\/2″][vc_single_image image=”33884″ img_size=”full”][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]\n

THE ECONOMIC IMPACT ON THE AREA<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The overall budget for the fourteenth edition<\/strong> of Kino Guarimba was around \u20ac20,000 (\u20ac19,971.48)<\/strong>, covering participants’ accommodation and meals, fees for the project’s collaborators, festival materials, utilities, and office running costs.<\/p>\n

But the budget only tells part of the economic story. The presence of 47 filmmakers<\/strong> for 12 days<\/strong> brings people into the town every day who eat, drink, shop, buy props, and visit bars, restaurants, and shops. To understand how much this adds up to, at the end of the residency we sent participants a survey, answered by 36 of the 47<\/strong>, asking how much they had spent in Amantea during their stay, excluding travel costs.<\/p>\n

Taking the midpoints of the declared spending ranges, the average spend per participant was around \u20ac285<\/strong>, or about \u20ac24 a day<\/strong>, of which on average around \u20ac190<\/strong> went on food and around \u20ac65<\/strong> on drinks. Applied across all 47 participants<\/strong>, this estimate corresponds to around \u20ac13,400<\/strong> spent at local businesses in Amantea: a figure equal to roughly two-thirds of the project’s budget, on top of what was invested directly by La Guarimba.<\/p>\n

The impact is even more significant because September is a quiet month for tourism compared to August. At Lido Azzurro<\/strong>, for example, there was always a group of participants discussing their films, working, eating, or simply enjoying the view. In addition, three out of four participants (27 of 36<\/strong>) found the cost of living in Amantea lower than in their home country, 7 found it similar, and only 2 found it higher.<\/p>\n

This data shows why it matters to have people living in and filming in the town: every filmmaker who lives, eats, and works in Amantea brings resources to local businesses during a low season, and contributes to a positive image of the town and the region, attracting sustainable tourism without compromising the authentic story and experience of Calabria. It highlights the rich culture and history of Calabria and everything it has to offer.<\/p>\n

WHAT WE CAN IMPROVE<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The survey also helps us understand where to improve. Accessibility to Amantea by public transport was rated an average of 3.5 out of 5<\/strong>, and among the services participants felt were missing were above all spaces with Wi-Fi for editing work, the opening hours of shops and supermarkets (especially during the middle of the day and in the evening), a pharmacy and a currency exchange, and restaurants open on Mondays. Some also suggested extending the residency by a few days.
